Spitzer: Novak Djokovic's dream comes true

Today's Number of the Day is One.

Novak Djokovic, the 24-year-old Serb phenom, is now the #1 men's tennis player in the world, having finished off Rafael Nadal of Spain at Wimbledon on Sunday, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

It was an amazing year for Djokovic, whose 2011 record is 48 – 1, including 8 titles. His only loss was against Roger Federer at the French Open semi-finals. And Sunday's match was the fifth time Djokovic had beaten Nadal this year.

After two hours, 28 minutes with Nadal in the Centre Court, Djokovic pulled up a blade of Wimbledon grass, swallowed it, and threw his used tennis racquets into the stands.

"This is the best day of my tennis career," Djokovic said. "This is what I'm born for."

"I can imagine how Novak feels today," said Nadal. "Today, one player played better than me."

After the match, Djokovic told the great John McEnroe on NBC, "Can't wait to come to New York."

That will be in September at the U.S. Open. We can hardly wait. FULL POST

What we're watching: The Fourth of July, 2011 GOP campaigning...hacking Fox (Obama is fine)...reading DSK's future...gulping hot dogs

FOURTH OF JULY CAMPAIGNING – It's a work day for most of the Republicans running for President. Six of the GOP contenders are out campaigning on the 4th of July, mostly in early states Iowa and New Hampshire. Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich both march in the Independence Day parade in Clear Lake, Iowa - an important part of the state for conservatives.

Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman also start the day at the same event, the Amherst 4th of July parade in New Hamsphire, before each holds a series of events in the state. Rick Santorum hits 3 parades in Iowa, where he'll hold a dozen events this week. And Herman Cain addresses a tea party event near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, before ending the day tossing out the first pitch at a ballgame in Manchester, New Hampshire.

OBAMA ALIVE AND WELL – Hackers have been celebrating July 4th in their own unique way by taking control of the Fox News Politics Twitter feed and using it declare the death of President Barack Obama. Rest assured, TIME magazine reports, the President remains alive and well. The only dead thing here is Fox News Politics' Twitter password.  FULL POST

Barry H. Landau: Where there's a President of the United States, there'll be an American flag

ONLY ON THE BLOG: Answering today’s five OFF-SET questions is presidential historian Barry H. Landau, author of the best-selling book, “The President’s Table / Two Hundred Years of Dining and Diplomacy.”

Barry Landau Prod.

Landau is recognized as one of the foremost collectors of presidential artifacts and memorabilia. His collection comprises more than 26,000 invitations and menus. He has served nine presidents and has worked with every White House since Lyndon Johnson planning historic events. He has served on every Inaugural Committee since 1965.

I look at video or still images of President Obama every day and it seems that there is an American flag within camera range. You’ve been with so many presidents. Do you know if they are aware of the flags that are always in the picture with them?

Yes, most definitely–some more than others, especially after the advent of the media age, where images were transferred so quickly around the nation and later, the world. John Kennedy relied upon his aides, not so with LBJ and Richard Nixon, who would speak up themselves for reassurance that the camera angles were correct to include not only the American flag but the Presidential Standard as well.
