Altoona, Pa. is POM Wonderful for 60 days

Altoona, Pennsylvania is about to be transformed.

Morgan Spurlock, a documentary filmmaker, and his co-writer/producer, Jeremy Chilnick, were so completely blown away and offended by product placement in movies and TV shows–and the constant, ubiquitous advertising we see in our everyday lives–they produced the ultimate example of product placement and advertising. A film that was totally paid for by companies seeking to promote products. That's why it's called "Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold."

ONLY ON THE BLOG: Answering today's six OFF-SET question is is Bruce Kelley, Vice-Mayor of Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Kelley (left) been on the city council for seven years, and has been vice-mayor for the last three. He is also a pharmaceutical salesman and a drummer in a bagpipe band.

Also answering is City Councilman Erik Cagle, who was elected in 2007. He is safety trainer at Penn State University and he manages the Nashville country singer/songwriter Fred Myers.

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, the name of your great city– Altoona –will change to "POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," and that it will remain so for 60 days. How did filmmaker Morgan Spurlock convince you and the city council to agree to this?

EC: He showed us the money!

BK: It was really the efforts of the Sheetz Corporation. They are a local company that has a chain of about 400 convenience stores and they the only regional business or brand featured in this film. The company went to Spurlock and asked what it would take for you to do a premiere of this movie in Altoona? And he responded, well, if you’d change the name of the town, I’d consider it. FULL POST

Fallon: Royal Wedding will display British pomp, circumstance and political tin ear

ONLY ON THE BLOG; Answering today's six OFF-SET questions is James Fallon, Editor, Women’s Wear Daily, who is reporting from WWD’s London bureau to cover the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.  Fallon is overseeing WWD’s extensive coverage of the royal wedding.

Fallon was London Bureau Chief, Women’s Wear Daily, W Magazine and Fairchild publications between 1981 – 2001. Previously, served as news editor in Fairchild’s Washington, D.C., for two years prior to heading to the London bureau.

To the British people, still suffering from severe economic problems and fully aware of the blemishes and gossip that has accompanied the Royal Family for a few decades now, what is the real meaning of this Friday's wedding?

First of all, two four-day weekends in a row after last week's Easter break and then the holiday that has been declared for Friday, plus the May Day bank holiday. Never underestimate the importance of four-day weekends to the British; they are like the so-called “bridge” holidays to the French – called ponts – when a Wednesday holiday becomes a five day weekend.

Equally, though, it gives the Brits a chance to show the world what they do better than anyone: pomp, circumstance and waving the Union Jack. Red-coat wearing soldiers with gleaming gold helmets riding along on horseback; a horse-drawn gilded carriage; Westminster Abbey in all its historic splendor...it will make the heart of almost every Briton beat to the strains of "Rule Britannia" as they once again relive their once great Empire. What we're watching: Weds., April 27, 2011 – Bernanke on economy...ending oil tax breaks?...dealing with Syria...Donald's Dem. $

WAITING FOR BERNANKE – Bond traders are waiting to hear what Fed chairman Ben Bernanke has to say about inflation and the economy when he holds his first post-Fed meeting press conference Wednesday afternoon. Most experts don't expect the Fed will raise its key lending rate, which has been sitting near 0% since December 2008. And most also don't expect the Fed to announce another stimulus plan.

END BIG OIL TAX BREAKS? - President Obama repeated his call Tuesday for an end to $4 billion in oil industry tax breaks as gas prices approach $4 a gallon and after a top lawmaker indicated a possible shift in Republican policy. In a letter to congressional leaders, the president said the oil industry is profitable enough without the tax incentives and that the money should be spent on alternative energy sources and conservation.  FULL POST
