Spitzer: Trump, show us your $$$

With Obama's birth documents in hand, Eliot Spitzer challenges real estate mogul and potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump to show "your certification of net worth," concluding a discussion about Trump's net worth with Floyd Norris, chief financial correspondent of The New York Times, and Amir Korangy, founder and publisher of The Real Deal.

Here's the transcript:

SPITZER: Give us ballpark estimate. What do you think he's worth if you had to put a number on it. You're in the real estate business.

KORANGY: I would say probably around $2 billion.

SPITZER: $2 billion? That's real money.

KORANGY: Yes.

SPITZER: What do you think, Floyd?

NORRIS: I've got no idea what he's worth because we have no idea - we have no idea what he owns.

SPITZER: Right.

NORRIS: And we have no idea what he's borrowed against it. So I don't see - "Forbes" comes up with a number every year. I have no idea how they come up with that number.

SPITZER: All right. Let me say this. I'm with Floyd on this. I have absolutely no idea what he's worth. And I want this to be very clear. It's a fun topic to talk about. Almost make fun of the guy. I respect him. I like him. Disagree with everything he says about politics these days but this guy has built buildings, he's been good for New York City, and if there's a bit of bravado in there that also was what New York is all about.

Floyd and Amir, thank you for being here.

Donald Trump, here's my challenge to you. Right here in my hand President Obama's certification of live birth. We want you to show us your certification of net worth at least as good as this.

what a chump...yeah you, Spitzer, received donations from Trump but you don't need to defend him now that he's going off the deep end (whether Trump is calculating or just crazy)

I just want to compliment CNN for their choice of Eliot Spitzer. While I would not want to be married to him (been there done that with cheating spouses), but I sure do enjoy his shark-like debating style. From prosecutor, to government official, now to commentator, he has found his niche. I think he provides the most interesting, educational, and provocative commentary to date. I hope he enjoys it enough to stay around for awhile.

I agree. It's too bad we always hunt down the randy polticians – because they often have the best political skills – at least on the Left. The randy Republicans are almost always hypocrites. Democrats don't let their internal conflicts affect the way they govern and legislate.

Spitzer and other NY Democrats could destroy Trump IF they wanted to. I'm sure they know where half the bodies are buried – and have the connections and means to find the rest. And since NYC is the capital of the financial world – these guys know their way around accounting systems.

As a bluedog, I think Trump is the best thing to happen to America in a long, long time. And I imagine Spitzer agrees – which is why he was so diplomatic on camera. And I agree with him – Trump IS good for NY – so Spitzer's not just blowing smoke.

I expect the Democrats to handle Trump with kid gloves to see he gets as far into the campaign season as possible. As he whips up the masses (for a variety of reasons), his ego is too big for him not to go all the way. And if he gets the nomination? HA! Think of the savings. I won't have to donate nearly as much to Obama.
