Debuting Tonight: 'In The Arena'

CNN executive vice president Ken Jautz announces “In the Arena” ensemble program at 8:00 pm, starting Monday, February 28, 2011.  Below are statements from Ken, Kathleen Parker and Eliot Spitzer.

NOTE FROM KEN JAUTZ TO CNN STAFF:

I want to share with you some news today regarding our 8pm show. Kathleen Parker has decided to leave the program to focus on her writing, and we have decided to take the show in a new direction.

CNN

We will be adopting an ensemble format with several newsmakers, guests and contributors joining Eliot Spitzer each night. The new program will be called, "In the Arena," beginning Monday.  E.D. Hill and Will Cain will join the program as well others within and outside the CNN family.

We have been pleased with how the 8pm hour has become a centerpiece of substantive, policy-oriented conversation, and we are looking forward to building on that with this new format. Simply put, the new program will look beyond the headlines to analyze and discuss the most important stories of the day. The program will provide context and analysis through balanced and thoughtful discussions and interviews with a wide range of guests and newsmakers who cumulatively represent various points of view.

Kathleen will continue to appear on CNN occasionally to provide her insights and commentary. We thank Kathleen for her hard work and all that she has done to help us launch our new 8pm program. We respect her as a colleague and appreciate her perspective and contributions.

Statement from Kathleen Parker:

After bringing viewers a new 8pm show on CNN, I have decided to return to a schedule that will allow me to focus more on my syndicated newspaper column and other writings. While I am extremely proud of the show we created, and the subject matter and level of discourse Parker Spitzer promoted every night, it was a difficult decision to scale back my column a few months ago and, with the show going in a new direction, it is a good time to move on.

I want to thank the viewers who have been so kind with their comments and support. I will continue to appear to contribute and analyze occasionally on CNN and look forward to continuing my relationship with CNN and the many talented individuals I have worked with here.

Statement from Eliot Spitzer:

I wish Kathleen all the best in continuing on with her spectacular career. It has been a joy working with her as a teammate, and I continue to be a huge fan of the wisdom that jumps from her written work and the wit, charm and insight she brings to all that she does.

I watched "In the Arena" tonight. I was expecting a substantive discussion about the selected topics. I was very disappointed. The only person who made substantive comments was Eliot. The two other people didn't seem to even know what they were talking about. The woman reminded me of the women on Fox...talking points only. She was loud and abrasive while the man with her hardly said anything. If these two people are going to stay on the program I am not going to watch the show.

TedC wrote. "...don't like the 'regulars'"

Why? Because you do not agree with them? E.D. Hill and Cain had valid points as well as articulate and pertinent questions for the guest, Dr. Jasser. They contributed substantively to the dialogue on a very important topic. I hope we do not shrink away from this issue out of fear, it is serious.

Eliot Spitzer is far and away the most intelligent and knowledgeable of the news hour hosts on any channel. Why does he need the vacuous comments and sometimes silly demeanor of the other regulars. Leave Eliot alone...he is a pleasure to listen to (this from a devotee of Rachel Maddow)

Elliot where did you get those two reporters? Where ever it was put them back...They have no clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Radicalisms happens with whites here in America...i.e. The federal Building in Ok, killing of students in schools in America...do we have hearings about white America? This is CRAP!!! All it breads in hate please report that a few Muslims commit crimes as do whites and blacks and others and not blame an entire race for the crimes few peoples...Also lets report truth and not opinions.

Nobody is blaming an entire "race" or religion. It is about the radicalization of a small minority within that religion. If there were groups and pockets of Christians around the world who were attempting to blow things up wouldn't we begin to look at how Christianity is being used to propagate that type of radical behavior. When a professed christian commits a crime at an abortion clinic the media makes no apologies for reporting on it from a religious point of view and demonizing the Christian religion. The brush is liberally painted across the entire religion. No one stands up and defends Christianity. Hypocricy abounds!

Enjoyed Mrs. Parker with Elliot and will miss her. I thought when their show originally started I wasn't interested in anything Spitzer had to say based upon his past but after watching a few episodes he changed my opinion. Like Spitzer or not he indeed is a very smart man with a challenging and intellectual personality that I find worthy of viewing every show.

I'm going to miss Kathleen Parker. Wish she was the one staying. Eliot Spitzer spends too much time on his own personal soapbox rather than asking questions that might throw more light on the subject. If I wanted to hear a bunch of people shouting at each other and one-sided talking points, I'd watch Hardball or Fox.

How else can you get at the truth when people want to evade the issue that is the topic of discussion? Don't blame Elliot for pressing people who engage in "feel good" generalities. I wish more talking-heads in the MSM media would do the same. Journalism is the art of getting at the hard facts, not the dissemination of pablum. If there were more intelligent people who were not afraid to ruffle some feathers like Mr. Spitzer in the media, then the number hypocrites and liars in our political arena would be diminished; which would be good for the country in general.

Good luck to Kathleen in her future endeavors; Gov Spitzer will be just fine. He has tremendous insight into politics and world current events and is a very intelligent and sensible man. I hope that he has great guests and commentators on his new show to help him make it a success . I think that his show is sensational and very informative and I learn a lot from him. I just hope Edie Hill doesn't turn out like she did on Fox News channel cause I didn't think she was that great back then and just a blow-hard. I like watching Gov Spitzer,Anderson Cooper, Sanjay Gupta and I can do without Kiran Chetry and I like Soledad and I like Zain Verjee.

I really enjoyed the program and actually, swithched from MSNBC during that hour. Kathleen you will be missed for your opinions and as a buffer to the whirlwind Gov. Spitzer. He has been doing this type of thing all his adult life. I hope you give Cable News another shot in the future. Gov. Spitzer has done some outstanding interviews and I agree with him more often than not but as to the chemistry on the show, he gets a failing grade.

To CNN: Big, huge mistake (as quoted by Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman") in learning of the departure of Ms. Kathleen Parker from the Parker-Spitzer team !! Ms. Parker was a valuable asset to the program; and all guests–both men and women–were captivated by her knowledge, intelligence, and overwhelming beauty which she brought to the round table !! Ms. Parker could be compared to the likes of Princess Grace, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis . . . all present in one remarkable woman !! Yes, Mr. Spitzer dominated the main discussions; but that is his nature, and what he is all about !! This New Orleans family will miss you dearly, Ms. Parker–but we will follow your articles in "The Washington Post".

Kathleen Parker's talents lie in writing; she isn't made for tv. I'll be reading her Washington Post opinions. I'm looking forward to the show with Eliot Spitzer... it was much livelier that week of Egypt when Ms Parker was not there. Will Cain is great, but ED Hill... really? I've never heard her say anything with real depth.

Sorry to see Kathleen go. The show benefitted from having two very different people. They were excellent foils for one another and both were – and are – bright and thoughtful. This is too bad for those who like a spirited conversation between two bright, interesting and attractive people.

This was the night, a woman won her dignity back. Or do I make a mistake? The role she had to play in this show has not been appropriate for a journalist like her. Looking forward to see the new show. But at the same time I wish CNN the courage to find a place for a person like Kathleen Parker: not only as kind of a sidekick! Congratulation, Kathleen. It was the right decision. And good luck, Mr. Spitzer.

When I first heard that Eliot Spitzer would be co-hosting a show on CNN I wasn't much interested, given his past. Now I'm a Spitzer junkie! He's dynamic, brilliant, insatiably curious, clear-thinking, and fair. Though undoubtedly liberal he often questions or criticizes many actions/positions of the administration or other democrats. I find this refreshing after watching, for so long, the "talking heads" simply defend the left or right, as the case may be for them. Spitzer is a "natural" on television appearing comfortable and even reveling, in his new role. His comments and questions are insightful, provocative, and I look forward to the show in much the same way that I would look forward to an informative, stimulating lecture. Keep him on, let him blossom as a TV journalist. He's got what it takes!!

Further, I'd like to say that although I think Kathleen Parker is congenial, knowledgable, and asked the right questions, she lacked excitement and seemed uncomfortable on camera. A tgelevision personality she is not. As a columnist she has enjoyed huge success and I expect the will continue to do so. I wish her well.

II am so glad that Eliot Spitzer remains on the show, thank you CNN. Mr. Spitzer is smart, talented, and fits right in the position at CNN. I enjoy watching him discuss things intelligently with many good guests. I found it awkward for the show to have a co-host, any co-host. A co-host can just hinder the main host more than help.

Regarding people who dislike Spitzer because of his past mistake: it is the past. I believe that his wife decides to stay with him because she feels he well deserves a second chance. I feel for Mrs. Spitzer and supports her decision and her strength.

Conclusion: Mr. Spitzer will fully shine in the show and I am glad that CNN has recognized him and had the courage selecting him once more. Everyone should watch the show and should not relate his personal past to destroy him from the show. Thank you.

I never watched the show until the revolution in Egypt beganwhen Ms. Parker was off. I was surprised to look forward to Mr. Spitzer's coverage and thought his interviews to be some of the best. He is very intelligent, courageous and direct. When Ms. Parker returned to the show I thought she deadened the momentum of the show. She conveyed disinterest in the historic events. It's unfortunate because we need strong women journalists' voices on CNN and in the news business. But I was turning it off when she was on. So I look forward to the new show! Good move CNN.

I am disgusted with what you have done with the Spitzer show!!! E.D Hill is a compltete moron spitting out the usual nonsense from the conservative right. If you are going to talk about the WI union issues at least take the time to learn the facts about what is going on in this state. The Unions have a contract where both parties are "oblligated to negotiate" the terms and conditions of employment. That is in the law in this state. The Govenor is the one who has decided no to do his job! Dont llike that? work on the law. The state workers earn on avg 4.7% less than private workers. Research and learn before you speak Ms Hill. Keep her on the show and I am all done watching. I dont want to see CNN turn into FOX news.

I imported this mmeocnt from another site – – -John, that is a very wonderful way to explain a topic that I have found very challenging to take in, and even harder to discuss all the feelings that go along with it. I really liked how you brought compassion in, and paragraph five (I can't seem to copy paste at the moment). It was so hard for me that I set it aside to deal with in tidbits over the years. I encompass what you are saying, and came to the same perspective, but I admit I still struggle with it when I hear about heinous crimes, inhumane treatment, etc. The thing I tell myself (I admit it is completely to make myself feel better) is that as much as it might totally confuse me in this physical form, the idea of having that experience, the probability of having that experience was somehow grafted into the blue prints of reality, and probably for a very specific reason. Thank you very much for posting, and the positive light on a sensitive issue,C

She brought a great balance to the show. However, E.D. Hill needs to go tonight. She is as infuriating as Gov.Walker of Wisc. She sounds llike a Nazi. I hope she gets fired and is forced to work at Walmart for the rest of her miserable existance. She is clearly unamerican in her views and deserves to work for minimum wage with no pension and not benefits like health insurance. She is clearly working for that same Nazi team as Gov. Walker. Wonder why? I watch CNN for intelligent and objective discussion. Talk about the $140 million Walker business tax cut, the influence of the Koch brothers, the concessions already offered up, and the other powers the Gov. gets if this bill is signed. They were both showing the typical agressive conservative style. Could they have leaned over table any further? Did E.D. give Cain some lessons from her Fox news training? Can she ever shake her Fox style of interrupting and speaking louder over the other person assuming they will yield to her. Cain is silly! Intellectuals they are not!!! ED Hill doesn't belong on this show. If I wanted to watch people who interrupt and just say the same thing over and over, I could watch any other news program on in the evening. After a few minutes of watching her at the end of the show, I shut off the TV. I may not agree with Elliott, but I can listen to thoughtful conversation. Eliot is a positive to CNN. I have left MSNBC to listen to him. Parker was a quiet balance to him, and I wish her well. However, I can not stand ED Hill. What a big mouth with no apparent intellect to support her babbling. Where did you find her? She like a know it all and adds nothing to Spitzer, reducing the program to a Fox like status of nonsense. Leave Eliot alone to find appropriate guests that add to his intelligent discussions. I also find Will Cain lacking in matching Eliott. If you want to make a success of this program, recognize what many aficionados want. Intelligence, depth and style-all of which Eliot has.

I am tired of always hearing that a cut on the capital gains tax is a tax cut for the rich. It is also a tax cut for everyone with a 401K, IRA or any other retirment account. It is also important for all the seniors living on their investments. These people are not in the top 2%.

Spitzer is a brilliant, accomplished man. Why can't he have a show by himself and bring in his own choice of guests? The two newbies are not in the same league – at least Parker was attractive, intelligent, witty, charming and ADDED value. These two new ones do not add value in this arena with Spitzer. I am sure they do in other places. What were you thinking? Please fix the program. Spitzer is excellent and I enjoy the way he thinks out loud.

I like Eliot for the same reason I like CNN.....they keep it balanced somewhere in the middle. They seem to take their responsibility of gatekeepers of information seriously. Eliot has the brains.....along with the passion to care.....and a voice thats easily understood. I liked E.D. Hills opinion on the WI union issue. Sometimes telling the truth isn't popular...but it is necessary. I believe in unions...but they are lead by humans....and human greed can never, never, be satisfied. Unions need to be thankful for what they have....and understand that their hayday is over. The days of kicking, screaming and demanding.... until you get what you want.... are over. Good bye manufacturing sector....good bye tax base. Keep telling the truth E.D.

I watched again tonight to see if I had been too "judgemental" in my opinion about ED Hill. No, I am confirmed. She is way out of her depth. Please spare us of her inane chatter. We have a country and a world filled with people of intellect, regardless of their political persuation. You MUST be able to do better than this. One more night and its over for me, as much as I enjoy what Spitzer brings to the arena, its too annoying to listen to this superficial discussion with canned, knee jerk silliness.

Spitzer is brilliant, implausibly articulate, professional and polite. His instincts are perfect and his skill as an interviewer is the journalistic surprise of the decade. E.D. Hill is the polar opposite: her constant interrupting, lame attempts to "yuk it up," and feigned, over-the-top emoting are an insult to the viewer, in particular to women. To re-state the obvious: Eliot Spitzer needs no co-host.

I liked Parker Spitzer-although Kathleen Parker was not emphatic enough she was getting better. Parker Spitzer presented two intelligent people articulating a range of ideas and opinions. The new show is terrible. Eliot Spitzer would do a good program on his own–but the program with two new people is useless–full of yelling, sound and fury signiifying nothing. Everyone ( even Spitzer who is excellent) is diminished by the format and the guests. I am back to Lawrence O'Donnell-even though I would prefer a more balanced approach, it is not In the Arena as currently presented.

Will miss Kathleen , she was gracious and kind , and moderate in her beliefs , a good foil for Eliot I thought .

I do NOT like Will Cain . If I want to see a neocon ghoul I can watch Fox news. Nothing good will come from him arguing black is white all the time , no in depth discussion can take place .

Also, correct me if i'm wrong , but on the second show Eliot was interviewing an intelligent professor from Iran , giving keen insights into their government and the diversity of beliefs. At the end of the interview a pop-up bar came up at the bottom of the screen identifying him as a "mouthpiece for the president of Iran" . What the hell was that all about ????

I guess CNN's new strategy is if you can't lick Fox News , join them !!!!!

This show should be given to Splitzer alone. i hated the two other (Hill) and the other one, who was the worse(the young man). Piers Morgan's program is the worse on CNN, and he's interviewing by himself. Give that program (Arena) to Spitzer, he is the best on it.

I liked Kathleen Parker but felt she was out of place in this show – felt Eliot should have had his own show – but to think that they would put someone on like ED Hill is amazing – she is totally out of place – she is loud and aggressive and somewhat disprespectful – she has nothing to add to the program and has nothing of interest to say – Will Cain seems to be like a student with the Professor being Spitzer – both Hill and Cain need to go – let Spitzer just have his own program like Chris Matthews and have guests on.

E.D. Hill is too much of a lightweight for Spitzer in every way. At least Parker had something upstairs. But Hill ain't going to do it. Cain may also be too light for Spitzer, although he's can at least go a few rounds with the governor. I'd rather see Spitzer with rotating quests, and a continuation of the good, solid discussion he originates. Is CNN trying to attract the Fox type of viewer by shifting "center" (right)? The quality of your left-leaning punditry has declined. Spitzer and Fareed (too smart not to watch) are about all I can stand. If I hear another daffy "reporter" say Social Security is a problem, or that austerity is the solution to the current economy, I'll subscribe to MSNBC. CNN is becoming a disaster.

I'll give them credit though, it's getting tougher to get the best' headline anymore, especially now that people want the info even quicker and more succinctly than at any time before. In our agency we had to ding ourselves a few weeks ago when we sent out a press release with the headline: Debut Broadcasting Hosts Mark Chesnutt at the Famous Wildhorse Saloon for Live from CRS-39 It may not seem that bad, but if you don't know who Mark Chesnutt is, you wouldn't know what this is about.

Instead of a verbose articulate conservative intellectual (Buckley) the moderator would be concise articulate progressive intellectual (you). We need a show like that. Forget mainstream media; the bar is just too low these days. What is needed is show that challenges our ideologies by testing our objectiveness so that bar can be raised again. Maybe Bill Moyers and/or Dan Rather could help you produce it. You're the man for job, Eliot. Trust me.

After learning that Mr. Eliot Spitzer's "In the Arena" program was dropped from CNN's prime-time lineup, we are not surprised !! We had predicted this would occur when CNN made the big, huge mistake (as quoted by Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman") by letting Ms. Kathleen Parker depart from the Parker-Spitzer team !!

Ms. Parker was the valuable asset to the program . . . and had all the guests and television viewers captivated by her knowledge, intelligence, and overwhelming beauty which she had brought to their round table !! Ms. Parker could be compared to the likes of Princess Grace, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis–all present in one truly remarkable woman !!

Yes, Mr. Spitzer dominated the "Parker-Spitzer" program; but, that is his nature–and what he is all about !! After all has been said, we do wish Mr. Spitzer all the best . . . as he is a very smart and professional individual !!

Oh, yes: we do follow and keep up with our Ms. Kathleen Parker, as she continues her excellent writing for "The Washington Post" newspaper !!

Needless to say, they are infinitely smarter and more sophisticated. As their numbers grow, the more the corporate media outlets should fear them. They would be wise to objectively report on the FACTS regarding this movement. However, I recognize that until that day comes CNN and its vapid mouthpieces will continue to play "punch the hippie". Here's a brain-teaser that confounds even the most intrepid of reporters. Enjoy!

You are completely surrounded by people who are frantically yelling at you to listen to only them, for they alone have the truth. Each claims that if you listen to ANY of their stories besides from the true version, you will never again have the opportunity to access to the truth. In order to uncover the true truth-teller you can only ask ONE question. The twist is that in response to your probative question, the would-be truth-teller can tell you a lie to throw you off. What in the following list of questions HAS to reveal the truth-teller:

    a) What is your favorite color?
    b) Do you think auto erotic asphyxiation was invented by reptilian or satanic spawn?
    c) Are you going to lie to me?
    d) If I were a hammer, how would you know? (hint: answer is either yes or no)
    e) If CNN didn't exist, would it be necessary to invent it?
    f) Is there truth in 'profit'?
    g) Does greed come to those who pray for it?
    h) In genesis, what is worthy of redemption?
    i) Who or what am I?
    j) What would you say to someone that insists on insisting on insistence insistently?
    k) Do you think you're alone?
    l) What is the secret ingredient in an Orange Julius?
    m) Does myopia absolve or blind you?
    n) Is my voice a thing or a condition?
    o) When does transcendence co-opt enlightenment?
    p) If I had wheels, would I be a bus or a merely a victim of circular reasoning?
    q) What purpose does truth serve?
    r) Can truth prevail over falsehood?
    s) Has truth ever prevailed?
    t) Do you consider yourself truthful?
    u) Are you worthy to be the vessel of truth?
    v) Can lies be made to sound truthful?
    w) Do you ever lie and feel bad about it afterwords?
    x) Do you sometimes lie and forget why you lied?
    y) Do you lie habitually?
    z) Do you pretend to tell the truth?

Corporate lobbyists controlling the legislation that gets passed in this country at the expense of the people is, by itself, a foul enterprise. However, the necessary co-opting of the peoples media is in order to achieve these goals is by far the most disturbing; for it relies on the ignorance of the masses and the complicity of the executives of the so called "free press". These prerequisites carry the stench of the most foul of all the beasts. Fortunately, the "rankness" demonstrated by MSM will not go unnoticed by the American people. They will react accordingly.
